URANUS Uranus was the primal Greek god personifying the sky. His name in Roman mythology was Caelus. In Ancient Greek literature, Uranus or Father Sky was the son and husband of Gaia, Mother Earth. Uranus and Gaia were the parents of the first generation of Titans, and the ancestors of most of the Greek gods, but no cult addressed directly to Uranus survived into Classical times. Elemental Earth, Sky, and Styx might be joined, however, in a solemn invocation in Homeric epic.

Cyclopes- Greek myth: a primordial race of giants, each with a single eye in the middle of his forehead. Hesiod described three one-eyed Cyclopes, Brontes, Steropes and Arges the sons of Uranus and Gaia, brothers of the Titans, builders and craftsmen, while the epic poet Homer described another group of mortal herdsmen Cyclopes.

COEUS In Greek mythology, Coeus was one of the Titans, the giant sons and daughters of Uranus and Gaia. His equivalent in Roman mythology - though he scarcely makes an appearance - was Polus, the embodiment of the celestial axis around which the heavens revolve. Like most of the Titans he played no active part in Greek religion but was primarily important for his descendants Leto and Asteria. .

In Greek mythology the Erinyes were female deities of vengeance. They correspond to the Furies or Dirae in Roman mythology. According to Hesiod's Theogony, when the Titan Cronus castrated his father Uranus and threw his genitalia into the sea, the Erinyes as well as the Meliae emerged from the drops of blood when it fell on the earth (Gaia), while Aphrodite was born from the crests of sea foam

Aphrodite Necklace - Greek Goddess of Love and Beauty - Venus - Victorian Pendant - Rococo
Handmade aphrodite necklace based on a Rococo cameo.Aphrodite, ancient Greek goddess of sexual love and beauty, identified with Venus by the Romans. The Greek word aphros means “foam,” and Hesiod relates in his Theogony that Aphrodite was born from the white foam produced by the severed genitals of Uranus (Heaven), after his son Cronus threw them into the sea. Aphrodite was, in fact, widely worshipped as a goddess of the sea and of seafaring; she was also honoured as a goddess of war, especially

Γαία - Gaia
In Greek mythology, from Ancient Greek Γαῖα, is the personification of the Earth and one of the Greek primordial deities. Gaia is the ancestral mother of all life: the primal Mother Earth goddess. She is the mother of Uranus (the sky), from whose sexual union she bore the Titans (themselves parents of many of the Olympian gods) and the Giants, and of Pontus (the sea), from whose union she bore the primordial sea gods. Her equivalent in the Roman pantheon was Terra.

Cool And Interesting Fun Uranus Facts For Kids
Uranus is the seventh planet from the Sun, as well as the third largest in terms of size, the fourth largest in terms of mass, and one of the least dense objects in our solar system. The most interesting fact is that it is the only planet in the solar system that takes its name from Greek (rather than Roman) mythology. Do you know friends, Uranus is the first planet that was discovered after the invention of telescope. It was first seen by John Flemstead in 1690, but he felt like a star in the

, named for the Greek god of the sky, was discovered on this day in 1781 by William Herschel! All of the other planets in our solar system (except Earth) were given names from Roman mythology. If Uranus had been named for the Roman god of the sky, we would call it Caelus!

They said he might have the last ancient treasure Uranus. Shirahoshi is Poseidon, Frank burned the blueprint to Pluton the warship and nobody knows anything about Uranus. Uranus is the father of gods in Roman mythology and god of the sky so maybe it can control weather as well.

@Jacob_edwards16 like most planets the name comes from Greek or Roman mythology. Uranus was the primordial diety of the sky

KyleDAnderson 5 Aug 2012
Uranus actually is Greek. His analogue in Roman mythology is Caelus. I was surprised also.

aceTechnologist 9 Nov 2012
Uranus was known as Cronus in Roman mythology. He was the sky! Then he got, ahem, neutered. :V

Aion in Greek mythology or Eon in Roman mythology. Not Uranus.

according to Nasa: Uranus has 27 known moons. While most of the satellites orbiting other planets take their names from Greek or Roman mythology, Uranus' moons are unique in being named for characters from the works of William Shakespeare and Alexander Pope. 😌😌😌😌🙃👽

The planets in our Solar System, apart from the Earth, are named after figures in Roman mythology. Also apart from the crowd is Uranus which is a Greek god. Also, side fun fact, the moons of Uranus are named after Shakespearean characters!

Astronomy fact - the planets of our solar system got their names from ancient Roman mythology and the tradition continued with the much later naming of Uranus, Neptune and Pluto.

Some myths say Uranus (Caelus in Roman mythology) was born from Gaia & Chaos, others say Gaia was the sole parent of Uranus. Uranus was God of the Skys, God of the Heaven

ka_boom87 21 May 2018
With the exception of Earth, all of the planets in our solar system have names from Greek or Roman mythology. This tradition was continued when Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto were discovered in more modern times. Mercury is the god of commerce, travel and thievery in Roman mythology

rayanselmo 25 Apr 2018
Stray thought: If the science community can decide that Pluto is/isn't a planet, why can't they also rename Uranus something that sounds less silly? How about Caelus, Uranus' equivalent in Roman mythology, or Varuna from India? Aether was Uranus' father - that's an improvement.
